John McConnell is honoured to have been selected as a full member of the Artist’s Association of Ireland in 2002.
The artist was born in 1937 and educated in Northern Ireland. After a successful 16 year career in Advertising in UK. Ireland and Canada, he had a 19-year career in art education at one of Canada’s leading private boarding schools.
He began his full-time painting career in Ontario 1989.
In 1997 he returned to Ireland to paint and quickly established himself in the contemporary Irish painting scene. He was awarded “income tax-free status” by the Irish Government for paintings which were “of cultural value to Ireland,” and he shipped his paintings to many countries of the world.
As well as having his own gallery in Ireland to exhibit his work, he had many other exhibitions in Ireland during that time.
In addition, a painting in his “Journey of an Ancient Soul” series was purchased by the Allied Bank which has the largest corporate collection of contemporary Irish art in Ireland.
He also won an Ireland wide competition by AIG Global Investment Company to create a painting in memory of an executive lost in New York on September 11th. This is a 4ft x 5 ft painting in his “Soul” series, known as “The Bill Dimmling Ancient Soul.”
In addition to his well-known ‘Ancient Soul” series and his recent abstract series there are many landscapepaintings in oil, acrylic and watercolour in collections in Canada and around the world.
In May 2004 McConnell left his 7 year stay in Ireland and moved to Vancouver Island BC Canada.
He now lives in Victoria with his wife Geraldine Slater.
Recently he has completed a series of portraits of great Irish writers and self-published a book of the portraits titled “ From Oscar Wilde to Seamus Heaney and Edna O’Brien.”
His current series are landscapes inspired by Salt Spring Island,
and he is pleased to be represented by “Gallery 8” in Ganges.
