Sal is a painter working primarily with oils and wood. She works both ‘en plein air’ and in the studio,
where smaller plein air sketches become larger works. Observing the world around her and creating
artwork as a process of reflection is something that has always felt natural. Colour, mood, and depth are
key aspects of her work, and combine to draw the viewer into the intimate moment between person
and place reflected in each painting. It is the quiet, fleeting moments that pass between us and the
places we find ourselves, wild or rural, are what Sal loves, and feels compelled to paint. Painting is her
process of meaning-making; a way of exploring the nuances in what we see and how we see it. Sal lives
on the traditional territories of the Coast Salish people, splitting her time between what is commonly
known as Hornby Island and Salt Spring Island.
