Pietro Adamo was born in Toronto, Canada in 1955. He enrolled in the Fine Art and Art History program at the University of Toronto and Sheridan College. After graduation, he took a position teaching art at Chaminade College School in Toronto. While there he helped establish a strong visual arts department, one which saw many of his students go on to become prominent architects, designers, illustrators and fine artists. During his two decades of teaching, Adamo continued to paint and executed several private and public commissions of his work.

The paintings of Adamo are a celebration of the artists` admiration for the “unpredictable and inexhaustible record of life“. He abandons the conventional renderings of geometric forms through his textured surfaces and rough contours.

Adamo draws influence from artists of all periods and from the world around him. Travel is an important source of inspiration; especially trips to Italy, his ancestral homeland. During these extended stays, Adamo is able to explore monumental art and architecture as well as the small details of the rural landscape.

Adamo`s career as an artist has been a journey of continuous exploration and growth. His paper, wood and canvas have a constant audience. He has also released a highly successful series of hand pulled prints and posters, as well as bas-relief sculptures. Today his works can be found in galleries and collections worldwide.
The post Pietro Adamo first appeared on .

Fran Alexander, a Vancouver based painter, knew she wanted to be an artist. Her earliest memory at the age of three was sitting on her grandmother’s knee stringing glass beads, mesmerized by all the colors and the dance of light from their shiny surfaces. Taking every art class she could throughout elementary and high school, Fran carried on her artistic endeavors at the University of British Columbia, graduating as a teacher of art.

Fran has travelled the world, painting passionately in Vancouver, teaching art in Toronto, in Luxembourg for nearly a decade, and the rare opportunity of having taught in the Northwest Territories. As a member of the Inuvik Arts and Crafts Council for three years, Fran ardently promoted cultural enrichment in the North. Her presentations at the teachers’ conferences were richly informed by her classroom experience, and composed primarily of Inuvialuit, Gwich’n, and Metis children. Fran has said her time in the “Land of the Midnight Sun” was one of the most rewarding experiences of her life.

Fran expresses her passion for art with an architectural eye through the heart of a poet. She explores abstract impressionism in her art through a thoughtful process of multilayers of color. A skillful use of color, form, and balance are a testament to training, and diligent application, and her limitless subject matter is a constant muse, urging her ever onward to masterfully render paintings that are simply put, exquisite.

Fran is an Associate Signature member of the Federation of Canadian Artists.

“ I was entranced by art from an early age, enthralled throughout my life by the ability to capture, with intimacy, the magnificence of a blossom, the simplicity of ordinary moments, and the way light evokes a sense of feeling from all of these things.”
The post Fran Alexander first appeared on .

The artistic ability of Kathryn Amisson became apparent at a very young age. There was never a question as to the career she planned to pursue.

Painting full time since 1978, Kathryn has covered a range of subjects and used a variety of mediums. Her love of the West Coast continues to give her inspiration. Working in pastel on paper or oil on canvas she offers those who enjoy the beauty of our magnificent shores a taste of its unique character.

Her more recent work in acrylics has opened up a novel and challenging approach to her interpretation of familiar settings. Kathryn’s joy of the calm and the fury of our ocean is characteristically echoed in this scintillatingly new artistic direction.

Through the well-defined seasons of our year, Kathryn spends much of her leisure time in the environment she so fondly treasures. A most frequented and favourite destination is the Pacific Sands Beach Resort near Tofino where her passion for painting the scenes of our West Coast was first awakened.

Kathryn is proud to be one of the ‘Artists in Residence’ at the now well known event, “Painters At Painters'” held annually at Campbell River, B.C. Invited since its inception in 1994, she has participated every year along with such renown artists as Ted Harrison, Fenwick Lansdowne, Robert Genn and Alan Wylie to name just a few.

Kathryn devotes herself full time to the accomplishment of her much loved profession. Her work has been purchased by individuals and collectors world wide and her efforts in aiding and contributing to her chosen group of charities is well acknowledged and recognized. Kathryn and her husband, Graeme Roberts, reside in Brentwood Bay, British Columbia.
The post Kathryn Amisson first appeared on .

After graduation (1968) Peggy, her husband and children moved to Calgary, where she established a Stock Photo Company and worked as a commercial artist.

In 1993, Peggy undertook the 5 year Bachelor of Fine Arts program at the prestigious Alberta College of Art & Design, winning the Gregory Arnold Scholarship Award, and the Illingworth Kerr Scholarship Award.

After graduation from art school (1998) Peggy’s work was accepted at the Harrison Galleries, only to be stolen in a “theft by demand” break-in heist. Shortly thereafter, Peggy founded the EVA Artist Group, based in Calgary.

Peggy and her photographer husband now live on Pender Island. They designed a home with an artist’s studio where Peggy works full time on art. She established “Port to Starboard” where artist studios are open to visitors.

Peggy works exclusively in the pastel medium, focusing on landscapes. Her work is found in corporate & private collections worldwide. For six years running, Peggy has been chosen for the juried Sidney Fine Art Show. She is also a member of the Pender Island “Art-Off-the-Fence”, with a popular two-day outdoor art show in July.

“Recently, I attended a five-day workshop with Robert Bateman. He paid me an enormous compliment when he said:

“Peggy’s work has a Group of Seven feeling to it . . . It is nicely handled’.”

Peggy is represented by Gallery 8 on Salt Spring Island BC, Canada.

When Kristina was a young girl, her family emigrated from England on a ship full of teachers
and their families, landing in Montreal after a two week journey and then boarding the train to
be dropped off all across Canada. The Boardmans landed in Lethbridge Alberta, which was quite
a change from England. After a few years on the prairies, the family moved to Vancouver
Island. Her parents insisted the five children each bring home two books from the library every
week. Kristina’s choices always involved art, from books on learning to draw to stories about
artists from around the world. She would find any excuse to add a drawing to a school project
and spent much of her spare time making things.
Kristina’s fascination with the west coast is evident in her paintings. She is intrigued by the
array of beautiful and unique stones found on many walks along the beach. When working from
a blank canvas, she imagines the placement of stones along the shore and during the act of
painting the stones begin to settle into place as if the tide had just washed them in. Sometime
the stones bring in other objects such as shells or fishing floats, and every painting is like a trip
to the shoreline.

Kristina also enjoys painting commissions and has sometimes been given a stone with special
meaning or a little bag of pebbles to sneak into the commissioned painting, creating a new
treasure filled with these special memories.
She has a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Alberta University of the Arts with a double major
in painting and drawing and has achieved Senior Signature Status with the Federation of
Canadian Artists.

In the last few years Kristina has twice driven across Canada from Victoria to the coast of Nova
Scotia and found herself enjoying the colours and patterns of the stones found in mountain
creeks and the along the lakeshores of Ontario and unique beautiful pebbles from Canada’s
Eastern coast. These stones now co-mingle with her west coast favorites and some that friends
have brought from around the world. These special stones provide endless painting inspiration!
“… Boardman currently specializes in still lifes of beach stones, to the inanimate shapes of
which she lends as much personality as to an intimate portrait of a person. In its arresting
dramatic effect, Boardman’s work is similar to trompe l’oeil painting, where tricks of perspective
render a flat surface seemingly mulitidimensional. But Boardman’s work is art, not artiface. You
want to reach out and touch one of her paintings, so rich is their depth, complexity of colour
and pattern…”
The post Kristina Boardman first appeared on .

Jade Boyd grew up in the small country of Taiwan, influenced from an early age by the Chinese culture. After moving to North America in 1990, she resided in several cities, big and small, starting out in Brooklyn, New York and finally settling on Galiano Island, BC, which is now her home.

“All the experiences gathered from living in different environments have helped to broaden my vision. My recent paintings were inspired by my life on the Gulf Islands, where I see myself, at last, enjoying each moment and doing the things I love.

Nature has always had a great impact on my work. If I am in a place where the lighting and landscape combine to urge me to paint, I immediately begin visualizing a painting approach that suits the mood and subject. Spontaneity is one way I paint, yet at the same time, I may take many months or even years to finish the work, all the while continually analyzing it and learning from it as I progress.

Colors have such expressive power. I choose them to match my feelings at the moment I begin painting and then they provide a focal point for each work. My passion for color convinces me that both psychological and compositional effects of color can transform a visual energy into life. I apply acrylic paint in layers to capture the depth I perceive in nature. This layering process is time-consuming, but I enjoy the added intensity of colors and textures it provides. For me, the process is like a meditation. As a painter, the beauty of the world becomes a spiritual conduit, leading me to the recognition of natural beauty wherever I go”

Jade holds both bachelor and master degrees in fine arts. She received her BFA from Tunghai University in Taichung, Taiwan and her MFA from Brooklyn College, Brooklyn New York. During her time in New York, Jade was awarded the Manhattan Arts International Award of Excellence and the Shaw Memorial Award. Her paintings have been exhibited in galleries and shows in North America and Taiwan.
The post Jade Boyd first appeared on .

After first working as a designer and architectural renderer in Vancouver, Nancy Boyd taught drawing and painting at Capilano University for 23 years while maintaining an active studio practice. She has shown extensively in the Lower Mainland as well as in the US, Australia and Japan. Her work retains the influences of her early years, notably her fascination with mapping, viewpoints and conflations of scale.

“I think it’s important to remind ourselves to be in awe of the world, to continue to ‘see’ freshly. I enjoy looking for beauty in less conventional places. And although my first love is drawing, the accidents of process inherent in using varied media can also create that fresh and exciting way of seeing as I move through a piece.

I’m looking for the universal by witnessing and recording the particular, often through highly re-ordered or abstracted ways. The evidence of my own searching and curiosity may take me to the interior of the body, to the atmosphere of space or to the cell under a microscope. I often think my curiosity is similar to a scientist’s though I have completely different methods. Instead of looking for proofs in my work I want only to witness , to take pleasure in creating and to be curious about what I see and what it might mean.”
The post Nancy Boyd first appeared on .

I remember my first drawing. It was done on the wall that I could just reach from between my crib bars. That was my first art show Not well received by parents.

I never even thought about what I should be when I grew up and I’m still wondering about it now but for whatever reason, no matter what I did, it always came back to art work.

The word “artist” scares me and I consider myself to be a technician of artist’s materials. Allergies to oil paints pushed me to watercolours, then to acrylics. I painted with acrylics from 1985 to present day and likely tomorrow.

In 1991, having seen a small thread piece done by a chap in Australia that my sister owns, I decided to give the thread work a try. Well, my little machine sewed forwards and sometimes backward with looping bobbin threads but I got one done. I purchased another sewing machine and then later another that I have since modified by hacksaw to cool the engine more efficiently.

The landscapes and people are influenced by Kandinsky, Modigliani and other Impressionists but the cartoons are influenced by the antics of my animals. Many times I have been working on a piece and just laughed out loud.
